• National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month
Every year, towns, counties, and states around the country observe National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in September. This year, the 19th annual Recovery Month recognizes the impact that real people and real stories have on recovery, and celebrates those who have worked to advance the treatment and recovery landscape.
In 2008, we are highlighting the people for whom treatment and long-term recovery have given a renewed outlook on life. We invite you to take part in our theme, "Join the Voices for Recovery: Real People, Real Recovery," and spread the word that addiction is a medical illness and that treatment is effective and recovery is possible. By getting involved, you can help more people on a path of recovery to lives.

• American Heart Association’s
17th Annual Start!
San Diego Heart Walk: Advancing heart health one step at a time
...Cardiovascular disease does not discriminate, as it is the number one cause of birth defects and also the leading cause of death for women, killing nearly half a million women a year - about one per minute.
Over 10,000 people from across San Diego County will celebrate healthier lifestyles and better living by walking with families, friends, co-workers and heart and stroke survivors in the 17th Annual San Diego Start! Heart Walk: In Memory of Nancy Saint Woods. The event inspires walkers to step toward a stronger, healthier life.
Registration is free but donations are welcomed and walkers are encouraged to raise money for the cause
The Start! Heart Walk is a wonderful way for individuals, friends, families, companies and employees to team up with the American Heart/Stroke Association’s fight against heart disease and stroke.
Join us and 10,000 of our closest friends as we take our hearts for a 5K walk on Saturday, September 20, 2008 in beautiful Balboa Park. This year’s musical entertainment is led by Stephanie Hargrove, who lost her brother to heart disease at the age of 23.
Diseases of the heart are America’s No. 1 killer; stroke is No. 3. Together these cardiovascular diseases kill more than 870,000 Americans each year and cost the nation over $400 billion in indirect and direct costs. The figures are just as daunting in San Diego, where heart disease or stroke killed 6,925 people in 2005, accounting for one of every three deaths in San Diego County.
The Start! San Diego Heart Walk is reportedly the largest such event in San Diego County, and draws significant support from some of the most influential companies in the area.
WHERE-Balboa Park- WHEN- Saturday, September 20, 2008-TIME-Registration begins at 5:30 AM, followed by opening ceremonies at 7:00 AM. Breast cancer is a malignant (cancerous) tumor that starts from cells of the breast. The disease occurs mostly in women, but men can get breast cancer too.
There is no sure way to prevent breast cancer. But a woman might reduce her risk somewhat by changing those risk factors that can be changed. If you avoid alcohol, exercise regularly, and maintain a healthy body weight, you are decreasing your risk of getting breast cancer.
Breast-feeding for several months also seems to reduce breast cancer risk.It is also important for women to follow the American Cancer Society’s guidelines for finding breast cancer early.
If you're concerned about breast cancer, the American Cancer Society can help. Whether you're looking to reduce your risk of the disease or find the best options for treating it, we've got the information you need. Or get involved in the fight against breast cancer by volunteering for one of our patient programs, walking in a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event near you, or lending your voice to our advocacy efforts.
ABOUT THE POSTAL STAMP-The United States Postal Service continues to sell the Breast Cancer Research Stamp, the first semipostal stamp in US history.
The idea for the stamp came from Dr Ernie Bodai, director of breast surgical services at Kaiser Permanente’s hospitals in Sacramento, and author of books, I Flunked My Mammogram (2001), and The Breast Cancer Book of Strength & Courage: Inspiring Stories to See You Through Your Journey.
Bodai, disturbed by decreasing funding for breast cancer research, started to lobby US Postal Service for a fund-raising postage stamp. For a long time the idea was resisted by the Postal Service, with pressure from philatelists compounding concern that the stamp would create a precedent that would be difficult to sustain. Bodai joined forces with a fellow lobbyist, Elizabeth (Betsy) Mullen, and mounted a campaign to convince US Congress and Senate. Finally in 1997, with the support of fellow Californians Senator Diane Feinstein and Representative Vic Fazio, Congress and Senate passed legislation to make it possible for the special stamp to be issued. The stamp was finally issued on July 29, 1998, in Washington D.C. |

• FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
The Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.
According to popular legend, the fire broke out after a cow - belonging to Mrs. Catherine O'Leary - kicked over a lamp, setting first the barn, then the whole city on fire. Chances are you've heard some version of this story yourself; people have been blaming the Great Chicago Fire on the cow and Mrs. O'Leary, for more than 130 years. But recent research by Chicago historian Robert Cromie has helped to debunk this version of events. But if a cow wasn't to blame for the huge fire, what was? Over the years, journalists and historians have offered plenty of theories.
According to the National Archives and Records Administration's Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. The President of the United States has signed a proclamation proclaiming a national observance during that week every year since 1925. • WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY
The World Mental Health Day promotes mental health advocacy and educating the public on relevant issues since October 10,1992. It was started as an annual activity of the World Federation for Mental Health by the then Deputy Secretary General Richard Hunter. The day is officially commemorated every year on October 10th. We would like to stress that this isn't simply a one day event. The preparations go on for months beforehand and this is truly a long-term educational effort. In some countries the program stretches over several days, or a week, or even in some cases a month. And in some places preparations for the following year start almost as soon as the current year's event is over. For more information and materials available please contact the World Federation for Mental Health at (703) 313-8680, or by e mail: info@wfmh.org - or visit www.wfmh.org |

• Clean hands prevent infections.
Handwashing is a simple thing and it’s the best way to prevent infection and illness. - Hands pick up germs, spreading them from surface to surface, food to food and person to person.
Keeping hands clean prevents illness at home, at school, and at work. Hand hygiene practices are key prevention tools in healthcare settings, in daycare facilities, in schools and public institutions, and for the safety of our food.
Wash your hands in warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds. Wash front and back, between your fingers and under your fingernails. Sing two choruses of “Happy Birthday” or the “Alphabet Song” (both take about 20 seconds) — and teach your children to do the same. More |

• Cervical Health Awareness Month
Women Urged to Take Action and Protect Themselves in New Year - Approximately 10,000 American women will learn they have cervical cancer/HPV this year, and nearly 4,000 will die from an advanced form of the disease. This January, during Cervical Health Awareness Month, the National Cervical Cancer Coalition (NCCC) is focused on educating women about the importance of the Pap test as a screening tool for cervical cancer/HPV and about vaccines that can further reduce the burden of this devastating disease.
It's the start of a new year - a time many reflect on their health. To start the year right, we encourage women to contact their health care provider to schedule a Pap test to check for cervical cancer. This screening is a crucial part of a woman's health care regimen, yet one that many overlook. "It's important to remember that cervical cancer is a preventable disease - as long as it's caught early enough," says Ms. Sarina Araujo, Executive Director of the NCCC. More |

• National Glaucoma Awareness Month
More than four million people in the United States have glaucoma, a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve and destroy eyesight. Unfortunately, nearly half of those with glaucoma are not even aware that they have it. Are you one of them? You owe it to yourself to find out by getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam that includes having drops put in your eye. With its painless and gradual loss of vision, glaucoma may have no early warning signs, but it can be detected during a comprehensive dilated eye exam.
During a comprehensive dilated eye exam, an eye care professional can see inside the eye to detect signs of glaucoma, such as subtle changes to the optic nerve, before any symptoms appear. This allows the eye care professional to determine if you have glaucoma or are at risk for it, to monitor your condition, to treat glaucoma as early as possible, and to look for other vision problems. Once symptoms appear, it may be too late to prevent vision loss and the progression to blindness. Everyone, from infants to seniors is vulnerable. Moreover, among African-American and Hispanic populations, glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness. For more information please visit www.nei.nih.gov and for materials available

During National Radon Action Month in January, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Surgeon General urge all Americans to protect their health by testing their homes for radon. You can’t see, smell, or taste radon, but it could be present at a dangerous level in your home. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in America. For more information |

• Thyroid Awareness Month
Over 27 million Americans have overactive or underactive thyroid glands, but more than half remain undiagnosed. - The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland found just below the Adam's apple.
The thyroid gland makes, stores, and releases two hormones—T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). Thyroid hormones control the rate at which every part of your body works. This is called your metabolism. Your metabolism controls whether you feel hot or cold or tired or rested. When your thyroid gland is working the way it should, your metabolism stays at a steady pace—not too fast or too slow.
The thyroid is a gland that controls key functions of your body. Disease of the thyroid gland can affect nearly every organ in your body and harm your health. Thyroid disease is eight times more likely to occur in women than in men. In some women it occurs during or after pregnancy. In most cases, treatment of thyroid disease is safe and simple.
The first step toward taking control of your thyroid health is identifying whether your thyroid hormone levels are in balance. The second step is to recognize that there are effective treatments to manage thyroid disease, as long as you follow your doctor’s instructions. • Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association's national call for women to take charge of their health and live stronger, healthier lives.
National Wear Red Day, a day dedicated to building awareness of heart disease as women's No. 1 killer.
Cardiovascular diseases claim more women's lives each year than the next five causes of death combined. More than 460,000 women nationally die per year as a result of the disease - a rate of about one woman per minute.
The American Heart Association, as part of its Go Red For Women movement, is encouraging everyone to wear red on that day to show support of all women who, in some way, are each touched by heart disease or stroke.
The Go Red For Women movement began as a grassroots awareness campaign and has grown into a movement involving millions of women, men, celebrities, healthcare providers and political leaders.
Use National Wear Red Day as an opportunity to educate people about the Go Red For Women movement and the risk for heart disease by taking the Go Red Heart.
This comprehensive evaluation of overall heart health can help now and in the future. By knowing assessing their risks, women can work with their doctors to significantly reduce the chances of getting heart disease.

• ALLERGIE SEASON
The Spring season brings a shower of flowers but for
many also sneezings
People who normally wouldn't even notice the change of season experienced watery eyes and sneezing. Allergy sufferers all too familiar with the perils of high pollen counts were forced indoors, giving up visits to the park or a pick-up game of basketball because the sneezing, stuffiness and general misery of allergy symptoms were overwhelming.
Whether pollen counts will be high again this year or settle back into what is considered to be a normal range remains to be seen. Seasonally, and daily, weather conditions impact pollen counts, making it difficult to predict pollen counts more than a few days in advance. "On windy days, or for days after high winds, pollen counts are high because the pollen has been spread throughout the air," said Gillian Shepherd, MD, FAAAAI, chair of the Education Sub-Committee of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. "After it rains, counts drop as the rain washes the pollen away."
Allergic diseases are the sixth leading cause of chronic disease in the United States. Protect yourself and your dear ones getting the facts on allergies by visiting The American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology site |

• National Brain Injury Awareness Month
According to the Brain Injury Association of America, approximately 1.4 traumatic brain injuries occur each year. Every 23 seconds someone will suffer from a traumatic brain injury. Out of those injuries, 50,000 people die, 235,000 are hospitalized, and over 1 million are treated and released from the emergency room.
A traumatic brain injury is when a blow or jolt hits the head hard enough it causes the brain to move within the skull or the skull breaks and the brain is directly hurt. When this happens, the injury disrupts the normal functioning of the brain. Not all head injuries result in brain dysfunction. A traumatic brain injury can result in both short-term and long-term problems that involve impairment of cognitive abilities, physical functioning or both.
Brain injury is very complex because no two injuries are the same. How each person may react to the same type of trauma is unknown. The cause, location and severity also are factors in how a person will react to a brain injury.
The purpose of National Brain Injury Awareness Month in March is to help those who suffer from brain injuries tell their stories and raise awareness of the different types of brain injuries that can occur.
Brain Awareness Week is an awareness campaign organized yearly by the Dana Foundation. The campaign is to provide the public with information on brain injury, nervous system research, brain research and the benefits of research for these patients. For more information and materials available visit Brain Injury Association of America website www.biausa.org or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website http://www.cdc.gov

• National Endometriosis Awareness Month
Endometriosis is a painful reproductive and immunological disease afflicting over 7 million women and teens in theUnited States alone (twice the number of Alzheimer's patients and seven times those with Parkinson's Disease),1 withan estimated 70 million more worldwide. The disease is a leading cause of female infertility, chronic pelvic pain and gynecologic surgery, and accounts for more than 120,000 of the 500,000 hysterectomies performed annually.
What is Endometriosis? Endometriosis is a disease in which tissue like the endometrium (the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus whichbuilds up and is shed each month during menstruation) is found outside the uterus, in other areas of the body. Theseimplants still respond to hormonal commands each month, and break down and bleed. However, unlike the lining ofthe uterus, the tissue has no way of leaving the body. The result is internal bleeding, degeneration of blood and tissueshed from the growths, inflammation of the surrounding areas, and formation of scar tissue. There is no cure for Endometriosis, but there are several methods of treatment, which may alleviate some of the pain and symptoms associated with it. April is the National Youth
Sport safety Month
Accidental injury is the number one
killer of America’s children, taking
more lives than disease, violence
and suicide.
Prevention is the cure. It’s estimated that by taking these and other simple precautions, almost all (90 percent) of these accidental injuries can be avoided.
Fitness. Teamwork. Self-discipline. As more and more parents recognize the benefits of children’s sports, their popularity – especially among girls – continues to grow.Nearly three-quarters of U.S. households with school-age children have at least one child who plays in organized sports. Still more children participate in recreational activities such as bicycling, inline skating, riding scooters and skateboarding.
The accompanying risks, though, are sometimes forgotten in the excitement. In fact, serious sports injury is on the rise. Although death among children participating in sports is rare, more than 3.5 million children ages 14 and under suffer medically-treated sports injuries each year.
Fortunately, getting hurt doesn’t have to be “part of the game.” It is estimated that half of all sports- and recreation-related injuries can be prevented. Protective equipment, safer playing environments and rules designed to prevent injury are important elements of any game plan to reduce the frequency and severity of injury. • May is the Older Americans Month
"Working Together for Strong, Healthy, and Supportive Communities"
The United States is nearing the start of a tremendous demographic shift. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, one out of every nine baby boomers will live to be at least age 90.
Our Nation will benefit in many ways from a larger population of older adults, a group that constitutes one of our greatest resources. Older adults support our society by providing millions of hours of volunteer, community, and civic service through formal organizations and a variety of informal arrangements. They enhance our communities and personal lives by sharing and transferring knowledge of cultures, values, and life experiences among generations.
May is Older Americans Month, a great time to bring attention to the issues that affect older adults. This year’s theme is “Working Together for Strong, Healthy, and Supportive Communities,” which speaks to the opportunities we have to create better care and reinforce healthier societies for all ages. Working together, our communities can improve older adults’ overall quality of life.
Americans of all ages and backgrounds can celebrate Older Americans Month. Contact Aging and Independence Services to volunteer for activities in your area, promote community, state and national efforts to serve older adults, and find ways to enrich the lives of the older adults who touch your life. By working together we can improve the health and well being of our Nation’s older adults and pave the way for future generations. |

Eyes Need Sunblock, Too
....July is UV Safety Month, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology – the Eye M.D. Association – reminds Americans of the importance of protecting their eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. One of the greatest threats to your eyes is invisible. The scientific evidence is piling up: long-term exposure to invisible ultraviolet radiation can damage our eyes and lead to vision loss. Everyone – including children – is at risk.
.....Like your skin, your eyes never recover from UV exposure. Studies show that exposure to bright sunlight may increase the risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, both leading causes of vision loss among older adults. UV exposure, wind and dust can also cause pterygia, benign growths on the eye’s surface. The more exposure to bright light, the greater the chance of developing these eye conditions.
....Take these steps to protect your eyes from the sun:
•Select sunglasses that block ultraviolet rays. Don’t be deceived by color or cost. The ability to block UV light is not dependent on the darkness of the lens or the price tag.
• Ideally, your sunglasses should wrap all the way around to your temples, so the sun’s rays can’t enter from the side.
• In addition to your sunglasses, wear a broad-rimmed hat to protect your eyes. Don’t be fooled by a cloudy day. The sun’s rays can pass through the haze and thin clouds.
• Even if you wear contacts with UV protection, remember your sunglasses.
• Sunglasses should be worn whenever outside, and it’s especially important to wear sunglasses in the early afternoon and in higher altitudes, where UV light is more intense.

Let's enjoy nights illuminated by fireworks this July 4th and beyond.
...Each July 4th, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks. Children, often fascinated by the bright sparks, may grab the hot end of the sparkler where the temperature can reach 1,800 degrees. It only takes a moment for a sparkler to ignite a child’s clothing causing a devastating burn injury – possibly death.
Fireworks are illegal in San Diego County and extremely dangerous, especially those purchased in Mexico. Each year the UCSD Regional Burn Center treats patients who have suffered fire-works related injury, including from small fireworks called “poppers” that can explode in a child’s pocket and set the child’s clothes on fire, resulting in serious burns.
“In San Diego County, fireworks are not only dangerous but also illegal,” said James Floros, Burn Institute Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer. Floros points to the thousands, nationwide, who are injured each year from fireworks -- particularly children.
Public fireworks displays conducted by trained professionals are the smartest and safest way to enjoy fireworks because they are conducted in a controlled setting according to established regulations. As a public service to the community, the Burn Institute has compiled a list of licensed fireworks shows throughout San Diego County. For an updated list, visit
www.burninstitute.org
Fireworks are not toys, they are devices designed to reach high temperatures, to burn and spark, and to explode and launch. They are unpredictable by nature and too dangerous for nonprofessional users.
Be aware fireworks safety is not a supervision issue. A fireworks injury can happen in the blink of an eye, whether or not a parent is standing by with a bucket of water. During the holiday, keep in mind that the safest amateur use of fireworks is none at all.
For materials available please visit Prevent Blindness America www.preventblindness.org or the American Academy of Pediatrics
The American Academy of Pediatrics is part of the Alliance to Stop Consumer Fireworks, a group of health and safety organizations that urges the public to avoid the use of consumer fireworks and, instead, to enjoy displays of fireworks conducted by trained professionals. • 1- 31- International Group B Strep Awareness Month- Worldwide, Group B streptococcus is a leading infectious killer of newborns. It is the leading cause of blood infection and meningitis in newborns. Group B Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, and Listeria monocytogenes are the most common causes of meningitis in neonatals. In the United States, about 17,500 cases of bacterial meningitis are reported annually.
In America, before 1990, the highest cause of bacterial infection of the meninges was due to the bacterial strain Haemophilus type b. The introduction of Hib vaccine in the child immunization schedule has shown a drastic decrease in the incidence of bacterial meningitis caused by this bacteria.
The occurrence of bacterial meningitis is noticed in all age groups but seems to be common in infants and young children. It is also common in elderly people who are mostly above the age of 60. Children who miss the routine vaccinations of the immunization schedule given by WHO, are more at a risk of getting the infection. The good news is that it can be prevented, and you can help!

• 1- 31- Hemochromatosis Awareness Month- Hemochromatosis Also called: Iron overload disease, is an inherited disease in which too much iron builds up in your body. It is one of the most common genetic diseases in the United States.
Iron is a mineral found in many foods. Your body normally absorbs about 10 percent of the iron in the food you eat. If you have hemochromatosis, you absorb more iron than you need. The extra iron can damage your organs. Without treatment, it can cause your organs to fail. Hemochromatosis is an inherited disorder where there is increase in total iron body stores. This leads to deposition of iron in parenchymal tissues, eventually causing functional impairment. Men are affected far more frequently than in women. Arthritic changes are seen in approximately half of the patients. World Breastfeeding Week 2008
Mother Support:
Going for the Gold
Love your baby, give him your love and milk.
Every year on August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month.
In conjunction with the Olympics in August 2008, WBW 2008 calls for greater support for mothers in achieving the gold standard of infant feeding: breastfeeding exclusively for six months, and providing appropriate complementary foods with continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond....more
.... ” Scientific studies recently published demonstrate that if all the women initiated breastfeeding within the first hour of birth approximately one million neonatal deaths could be prevented each year around the world.
.....“The very first milk mothers secrete immediately after birth contains a great deal of substance, which no infant formula can provide,” explained UNICEF Chief of Nutrition Werner Schultink. “It contains a specific amount of carbohydrates, fats and proteins – ideal for the newborn. The protective factor of the breast milk is so unique, it’s basically the first immunization the child gets in his or her life.”.
Take advantage of local hospital promotional events and remember that, if you have any questions or doubts, you may contact the County Health and Human Services Department and the WIC Program office closest to you.
