• • NATIONAL IMMUNIZATIONS MONTH
.....Immunizations are one of the most significant public health achievements. Vaccines have eradicated smallpox, eliminated wild poliovirus in the U.S. and significantly reduced the number of cases of measles, diphtheria, rubella, pertussis and other diseases. But despite these efforts, today tens of thousands of people in the U.S. still die from these and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
.....The month of August is the perfect time to remind family, friends, co-workers, and those in the community to catch up on their vaccinations. Parents are enrolling their children in school, students are entering college, and healthcare workers are preparing for the upcoming flu season.Vaccines offer safe and effective protection from infectious diseases. By staying up-to-date on the recommended vaccines, individuals can protect themselves, their families and friends and their communities from serious, life-threatening infections.

• • AUGUST 1 -7 • • WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK
....August 1-7 has been declared World Breastfeeding Week and the motto emphasizes an aspect of breastfeeding that makes it matchless as much by its physical and emotional effects for the mother as for the baby.
..."World Breastfeeding Week provides an opportunity to highlight the benefits of breastfeeding and to encourage everyone to support mothers who want to breastfeed. One of the most highly effective preventive measures a mother can take to protect the health of her infant and herself is to breastfeed. It protects babies from many infections and illnesses, such as diarrhea and pneumonia. Children who have been breastfed have lower rates of childhood obesity. Mothers who breastfeed have a decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
The decision to breastfeed is a personal one, and a mother should not be made to feel guilty if she cannot or chooses not to breastfeed. But given the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of mothers and children, we need to do what we can to help mothers who want to breastfeed to do so successfully.
I hope World Breastfeeding Week will spark conversations and efforts that will support women who want to breastfeed." Statement from Surgeon General Dr. Regina M. Benjamin on World Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7, 2011

• • NATIONAL PSORIASIS AWARENESS MONTH
.....More than 5 million Americans have psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis, a degenerative disease of the joints and connective tissues associated with psoriasis. Psoriasis typically first strikes people between the ages of 15 and 35, but can affect anyone at any age, including children.
.....Psoriasis is a genetic, life-altering disease that results when faulty signals in the immune system prompt skin cells to regenerate too quickly, causing red, flaky, scaly lesions that can itch, crack, bleed and be extremely painful. Psoriasis generally appears on the joints, limbs and scalp but it can appear anywhere on the body, covering some people from head to toe.Ten percent to 30 percent of people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis, an inflammatory disease which causes pain, stiffness and swelling in and around the joints. There is no cure for this lifelong disease.

• • AUGUST • CATARACT AWARENESS MONTH
.....Did you know that 20.5 million Americans age 40 and older have a cataract? Cataracts are the clouding of the eye's naturally clear lens, preventing the passage of light needed for vision. They form slowly and cause no pain. Some stay small and hardly affect vision, but if the cataract does grow and begin to affect your vision, it can usually be removed with surgery.
Symptoms include painless blurring of vision, double vision in one eye, fading or yellowing of colors and sensitivity to light and glare.
....Currently, there are no medications or exercises that will cause cataracts to disappear, and contrary to popular belief, cataracts are not removed using lasers. Lasers are used in follow-up procedures, if needed. Cataract surgery is most often done as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. If they don't interfere with your life, you may decide surgery is not needed. But when they do begin to interfere, they can be treated surgically. Talk with your Eye M.D. about your options. As blood flows from the heart out to the blood vessels, it creates pressure against the blood vessel walls. Hypertension, the "silent killer," is one of the most common risk factors for heart disease, and a major risk factor for stroke and kidney disease.

• • AUGUST • CATARACT AWARENESS MONTH
.....Did you know that 20.5 million Americans age 40 and older have a cataract? Early prevention is key!
Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables may delay the formation of cataracts.Dark colored (green, red, purple, and yellow) fruits and vegetables usually have high levels of important plant chemicals (phytochemicals) and may be associated with a lower risk for cataracts.
.....In analyzing nutrients, researchers have focused on antioxidants and carotenids. Studies have not demonstrated that antioxidant vitamin supplements (such as vitamins C and E) help prevent cataracts. Fruits and vegetables containing these vitamins are important for overall good health.
.....Lutein and zeaxanthin are the two carotenids that have been most studied for cataract prevention. They are xanthophylis compounds, which are a particular type of carotenid. Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the lenses of the eyes. Some evidence indicates that xanthophyll-rich foods (such as dark green leafy vegetables) may help retard the aging process in the eye and protect against cataracts.
.....Eat well is easy! Add fruits and vegetables to all your meals. Try a glass of juice in the morning or add banana or raisins to your cereal, a side salad at lunch, a fresh fruit snack, add grapes or watermelon to your salads...
