Awards Scholarships
to 12 Area Nursing Students

San Diego -- Local nursing students received a helping hand with their education from Kaiser Permanente, with scholarships totaling $20,500 awarded to a dozen nursing students from six local colleges. Over the past decade, the HMO has granted over $250,000 in local nursing scholarships to nearly 150 students pursuing degrees in nursing.
“Kaiser Permanente is committed to supporting nursing education, and encouraging interest in nursing careers,” says Marlene Ruiz, MA, director of Education & Consulting. “As a health care organization it is essential to have a well-educated, highly-skilled workforce to draw from. By supporting nursing education, we are taking steps to ensure that there is a qualified workforce as well as giving students assistance in achieving their educational goals.”
This year’s local winners received their scholarships in the following categories:
Academic Excellence --3 scholarships of $2,500 to students with grade point averages of 3.7 or higher.

Mona Dopp University of San Diego
Jennifer Kaufman University of San Diego
Affiliate Program Series -- 6 scholarships of $1,000 to students enrolled in nursing programs affiliated with Kaiser Permanente's San Diego Medical Center.
Essie Asawapornmongkol San Diego State University
Maria Fleck National University
Kelly Hann Southwestern College
Raymia Ramos Imperial Valley College
Chandra Sitz Point Loma Nazarene University
Krystal Weigel University of San Diego
Graduate Study Series --1 scholarship of $2,500 to a student enrolled in agraduate program in California.
Nova Ragucos Talingdan San Diego State University
Second Career Adult Series -- 1 scholarship of $2,500 to a student studying nursing as a second career.
Danise Miller Point Loma Nazarene University
Underrepresented Groups in Nursing Series -- 1 scholarship of $2,000 to a student enrolled in nursing programs in California.
Yesenia Jimenez Southwestern College
“At Kaiser Permanente, we believe it is our responsibility to support those with diverse backgrounds who are among those needing financial support,” said Ruiz, adding “A goal in all of nursing is to match the ethnic diversity of nurses to that of the community and our health plan members. These scholarships bring us one step closer to that goal.”
The next scholarships will be awarded in 2007. Interested nursing students should contact their school or college for more information and applications.
