Supervisor Greg Cox helps community “Knockout” youth violence
Supervisor Greg Cox, who represents Logan Heights, Stockton, Memorial, Southcrest and other Central San Diego communities on the County Board of Supervisors, has recommended the allocation of grant funding for two boxing and fitness centers designed to offer positive outlets for at- risk youth. The Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved the grants of $5,000 to the Gladiator School of Martial Arts and Boxing for the purchase of gym and computer equipment and $13,600 to Lords Gym of San Diego for the purchase of a sound system. Supervisor Greg Cox has supported a number of community organizations through his office’s Community Project grant program which makes one-time grant funding available to nonprofit organizations for capital needs. Since 1994 the nonprofit Gladiator School of Martial Arts and Boxing (4125 Alpha Street) has worked to meet the needs of underprivileged children and adults by providing training in boxing, physical conditioning, anger control, aerobics, computer skills and educational tutoring. Their programs offer a positive alternative for the community to help fight crime, graffiti and gang activity while promoting health, education and violence prevention. “ Young people in the community need a place to go where positive choices are encouraged,” said Supervisor Greg Cox. “Both the Gladiator School and Lords Fitness are tremendous community partners in their work to give kids a place to workout, to have fun, and to stay on the right path away from gangs, violence and drugs.” The nonprofit Lords Gym of San Diego (4153 Market Street) was founded to improve the athletic, physical, social and spiritual lives of at-risk youth. Acting as both a gym and community resource center, Lords works to transform the community from an environment of darkness and destruction to one of brightness and peace by offering physical fitness opportunities, sports, martial arts, nutrition counseling, health services, educational classes, after school programs, mentoring, food distribution and resource referral for community residents.
