.

....To protect yourself and the people around you from seasonal flu, please go get yours today.

With the seasonal flu approaching and the presence of H1N1 virus (swine flu) in the community, more than ever we need to be prepared and keep taking the precautions of covering your mouth when coughing, sneezing and washing INFLUENZA VACCINEShands frequently and properly.

Every flu season has the potential to cause a lot of illness, doctor’s visits, hospitalizations and deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC, the seasonal flu kills 36,000 people and leads to 200,000 hospitalizations a year. The CDC is concerned that the new H1N1 flu virus could result in a particularly severe flu season this year. Flu season can peak from November through May. The best time to be vaccinated is October or November, according to the CDC.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC, recommend a flu shot for everyone, but especially for those at high risk: people ages 50 and older; those with chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma or heart disease; pregnant women; and those who care for or live with people who are most susceptible to the flu and its complications. People over the age of 65 receive the seasonal vaccine as soon as it is available.

The first of a series of flu-shot clinics began from the beginning of month of September, about a month early this year. People can get vaccinated at CVS and Walgreens, which are the first places to offer flu shots this year. Rite Aid will offer the shots starting in late September or October.

County of San Diego Health and Human Services Flu Shot Kickoff will be Friday September 25th. at the Meet the Pharmacist Day. An event held at the Martin Luther King Community Center 6401 Skyline Dr., San Diego 92114. To register for this event call AARP at 1877 926 8300. People interested in more information on flu shot locations could visit www.lungusa.org or call 211.

These are Flu shots, which do not protect against H1N1 or swine flu. The vaccinations for H1N1 (swine flu), are expected to be available in mid-October. The novel H1N1 vaccine is not intended to replace the seasonal flu vaccine – it is intended to be used along-side seasonal flu vaccine.
