...Each year, an estimated 44 million Americans experience diagnosable mental disorders or illnesses. Individuals with a mental health disorder may have disturbance in thinking, mood or behavior and may not be able to cope with the simplest aspects of everyday life in the most serious of cases. Thought disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorders may alter mood and thinking processes that are necessary to express thoughts and communicate in a coherent manner, and therefore may cause difficulty in the person’s daily living, their social interactions with their family, at school and at work with their peers or colleagues. Similarly, mood disorders such as depression or anxiety can contribute to difficulties in concentrating, performing tasks, lack of energy and interest in daily activities. Behavioral problems in children can also be due to childhood disorders such as hyperactivity and attention deficit disorders. Individuals with mental illnesses are faced with many problems as they deal with their emotional conflict, including the stigma and discrimination associated with having a mental illness or a mental health disorder.
