....Prevention Services for Early Intervention (PEI) ...An early diagnosis and a suitable treatment provided by a system of integrated services is very effective in the prevention of disabilities and in helping people who participate, their families and the community. Early Intervention Programs are designed with an understanding that many mental health problems are preventable, early intervention is cost effective, in terms of dollars and human suffering, and recovery is expected. -- According to the Institute of Medicine, prevention in the context of mental health occurs across the entire mental health intervention spectrum. -- Prevention in a mental health context involves reducing risk factors or stressors to prevent the initial onset of a mental illness, building skills, and increasing support. Prevention promotes positive cognitive, social, and emotional development and encourages a state of well being where individuals at risk can function well in the face of changing, and sometimes challenging, circumstances. The risk of untreated mental health illness is something no one can afford and should not happen to anyone due to a lack of information, the misconception that the "illness will go away by itself" with time, a lack of health insurance or out of fear of the negative "stigma" of seeking mental health treatments. The Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) program is designed with the vision that promotes early intervention and prevention services with medical and supportive care to prevent mental illnesses from becoming severe and disabling. The PEI program was created to improve access of care to mental health services by unserved and underserved populations by expanding and developing the types and quality of services and supports necessary to reduce the long term adverse impact on service consumers, their families and the state. The Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) emphasizes prevention and early intervention as key for successful outcomes over untreated serious mental illness. The Prevention and Early Intervention mental health services are confidential, are based on the belief that people can and do recover from mental illness, and are available just by calling: (619) 584-5063 Since Fall 2007, the County of San Diego input for Prevention & Early Intervention (PEI) planning for the ongoing planning process has started a series of several stakeholders to gather community input for an overview of PEI priorities and objectives and to established other funding categories to help the Agency to identify the best ways on how to invest the funding received annually by the County to implement the PEI programs.
