Exercising

All in the Family

Parenting means many things from conception onwards. It involves the children’s physical, mental, social, spiritual, and intellectual lives. All of them important. This editorial is about the physical growth of the children and also the physical health of the parents. The suggestion is for the entire family to participate in physical activities together.

From the very beginning when a child is born, the mutual holding of the baby and the gradual playing with its hand as it learns to grip and hold things to those later teenage years when more vigorous family activities take place, like going on a long hike in the hills together, swimming together, jogging or brisk walking. Little challenges can take place in gentle competition of playing games, even running, and jumping, and lifting weights—but caution to all, the more strenous exercises, can cause on to strain too much and can cause injury. Perhaps joining some exercise club where there is supervision and instruction available would be the best way to develop the body and avoid breaking it down.

The family can have a small volleyball court and perhaps play with the neighbors. Some form of exercise by the family on an almost daily basis is the best. In the early years, if the parents are somewhat competitive, they must caution themselves not to be too hard or “pushy” with their small children—they are only children from 5 to 12 years of age and must not be damaged or discouraged by an overload of physical activity.

Parents must beware off trying to make the children a “success” in some sport by too constant a discipline, for often it is the parents’ egos that are being built instead of the child’s body and personal love of activity.

A balanced and active family can do wonderful things for all within, with joy and pleasure, which should always be the goal, and not who is the “winner”, for all win when it is joyfully playful.
