WIC Have the History of 32 Years Building Healthier families The creation of WIC was made by the Congress in response to the realization that hunger and poverty were widespread in the country and that inadequate nutrition poses real dangers and high health cost to the nation. WIC was proposed as a preventive program to improved access to health care in order to prevent nutrition-related health problems in pregnancy, infancy and early childhood. “Since its beginning in 1974, the WIC program has earned the reputation of being one of the most successful federally-funded nutrition programs in the United States.saves lives and improves the health of nutritionally at-risk women, infants and children.”

Some children also suffered because mothers did not get adequate nutrition during their pregnancy. WIC was authorized as a pilot program in 1972, but didn’t open its doors until two years later in 1974,when the first WIC clinic opened in Pineville, Kentucky. Thirty-three years later, more than 8 million women, infants and children are participating in WIC and are receiving its benefits each month.
