Food Safety Month

“Food safety is a priority year-round for the nation’s nearly one million restaurant and foodservice outlets and we celebrate that commitment with September’s National Food Safety Month,” said Paul Hineman, executive vice president of the National Restaurant Association.

National Food Safety Month was created in 1994 to heighten the awareness about the importance of food safety education. Each year, a new theme with training resources is created to help reinforce proper food safety practices and procedures. For more information and resources, visit the NFSM website, ServSafe on Facebook, or join the conversation on Twitter using #foodsafetymonth.

The Healthy Aging Month

More than 15 years ago, the national health initiative, Healthy Aging, was developed to focus attention on the positive aspects of growing older and encourage Americans over the age of 50 to take personal responsibility for their health.

Healthy aging includes being physically and cognitively functioning, socially engaged, productive, and thriving.

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing” – George Bernard Shaw

SEPTEMBER THE NATIONAL CHOLESTEROL AWARENESS MONTH National Cholesterol Education Month

...High blood cholesterol affects over 65 million Americans. It is a serious condition that increases your risk for heart disease. The higher your cholesterol level, the greater the risk. You can have high cholesterol and not know it.

Lowering cholesterol levels that are too high lessens your risk for developing heart disease and reduces the chance of having a heart attack or dying of heart disease.September is National Cholesterol Education Month, a good time to get your blood cholesterol checked, and to learn about food and lifestyle choices that help you reach personal cholesterol goals.

National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

....Over the past 30 years, the childhood obesity rate in America has almost tripled. According to the CDC, in 2010, approximately 17 percent of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years were already obese. Children and teenagers who are obese are more likely to become obese adults. Overweight and obese youth are at greater risk of developing serious adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.

That is why HHS, with the President’s Council, supports First Lady Michelle Obama’s goal to end LetsMove-Cities-Towns-Countieschildhood obesity within a generation through her Let’s Move! initiative.

Everyone has a role to play – parents and caregivers, school teachers and administrators, community leaders, local elected officials, after school programmers, and health care providers.

Prescription drug misuse and abuse are our Nation’s fastest growing drug problem. Remove unwanted and outdated prescription drugs from our communities’ medicine cabinets is a significant step towards preventing prescription drug misuse, abuse, and accidental poisoning. Another advantage of this program is it discourages people from flushing drugs down their toilets. Drugs improperly disposed of wind up in rivers and lakes where they harm aquatic life and contaminate water supply, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
Events like this have not only dramatically reduced the risk of prescription drug diversion and abuse, but have also increased awareness of this critical public safety and public health issue, according to the DEA.

National Recovery Month -September 2012

Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for substance use and mental disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible. Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.
