January is the Cervical Health Awareness Month

Cervical cancer is nearly 100 percent preventable, yet according to the American Cancer Society, Cervical Cancer Awareness Monthan estimated 13,000 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed in 2002 and about 4,100 women will die of the disease. The good news is that cervical cancer is preventable and curable if it is detected early.
The United States Congress designated January as Cervical Health Awareness Month. During January, you may wish to highlight issues related to cervical cancer, HPV disease and the importance of early detection.

Friday 27 -County Helps Families File Taxes for Free

Do you pay to have your income taxes prepared? If you are a low-income family or individual you can save your money. The County can file them for you for free.
“In these difficult economic times, we want to help low-income families and individuals who are struggling to make ends meet,” said Greg Cox, Vice Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors. “With the help of 2-1-1 San Diego and our volunteers, we can help hard-working families and residents get access to EITC funds.”
Established in 1975, the EITC is a federal program designed to help low-income families and individuals out of poverty by helping them keep more of their hard-earned wages. The IRS estimates that about 20 to 25 percent of eligible individuals don’t claim the credit. Since the EITC campaign began, more than $44 million EITC dollars have been returned to San Diego County families and the local economy.

One in five local residents cannot read at the third-grade level, lacking the literacy skills needed to sign a form or fill out a bank deposit slip. San Diego County Library is doing its part to build better lives for the residents of San Diego County through the LEARN (Libraries Empower All to Read Now) program. The LEARN adult literacy program is hosting a free training for potential English language literacy tutors. About one-sixth of all Americans have high blood pressure and the incidence of this disease increases with age. High blood pressure can cause diseases without any early warning symptoms. High blood pressure can cause arterial disease (atherosclerosis) that can lead to heart attack, congestive heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure. Routine screening tests are part of basic prevention medicine.They allow doctors to find illness and treat it much earlier than they could otherwise. Patients with high risk factors for screened diseases can make sure they don't acquire the illness as well, and if they do they can treat it early on.
