Fire Safety Month

Fall is a beautiful season in San Diego, but it also announces the start of fire season for Southern California. All San Diegans know how suddenly fires can appear and how devastating they can be.

A breezy Saturday in late October, the desperation of a lost hunter sparked the largest wildfire in California history. Stay safe in San Diego this fire season!

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that fires kill more than 4,000 Americans each year and approximately injure 20,000 more. U.S. fire departments respond to nearly 2 million fires each year, with three-quarters of them occurring in residences. Think ahead with your Family Emergency Plan.

NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

.....As the nation marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the Early detection to reduce cancer deathsAmerican Cancer Society encourages women to take charge of their personal breast health in the fight against breast cancer. Women 40 and older should have an annual mammogram to detect breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stage.

.....Studies show that early detection of breast cancer through mammography improves treatment options as well as survival.

.....Early-stage breast cancer typically produces no symptoms when the tumor is small and most treatable, so it is important that women follow recommended guidelines for finding breast cancer before symptoms develop. Mammography will detect about 80 percent to 90 percent of breast cancers in women without symptoms.

October. 1-7- Depression Screening Week • Help for depression is available 24/7depresion screening week

Everyone has their ups and downs. Feelings of sadness and anxiety are normal with all the little stresses you encounter in daily life. But bigger issues like job loss, divorce or a death in the family can push a person toward a state of depression. When these feelings have an effect on everyday activities such as work, sleep and your ability to interact with others, you might be suffering from clinical depression without even knowing it.
October 1-7 is San Diego Depression Screening Week and the County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), Community Health Improvement Partners (CHIP) and nearly two dozen community partners are offering free depression screenings and information at approximately 60 locations around the county
During this week, residents of San Diego County over the age of 18 will have the opportunity to visit designated sites to receive a free, anonymous, depression screening, and learn about the signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety disorder, postpartum depression and other topics related to depression.
“There is no need to suffer in silence,” said HHSA Director Nick Macchione. “This is a great opportunity for people to come in and get screened and get whatever level of help or services is necessary.”
In addition to the week of screenings, the County’s multilingual Access and Crisis Line (888-724-7240) is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day with access to County Mental Health Services and Alcohol and Drug Services all year long.
Complete Depression Screening Week information, including the list of screening sites and participating agencies, can be found on the CHIP website www.sdchip.org or by calling the Access and Crisis Line. You can also call 2-1-1 or visit www.211sandiego.org.

Wednesday Oct. 7- 13-National Fire Prevention Week

The Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.
According to popular legend, the fire broke out after a cow - belonging to Mrs. Catherine O'Leary - kicked over a lamp, setting first the barn, then the whole city on fire. Chances are you've heard some version of this story yourself; people have been blaming the Great Chicago Fire on the cow and Mrs. O'Leary, for more than 130 years. But recent research by Chicago historian Robert Cromie has helped to debunk this version of events. But if a cow wasn't to blame for the huge fire, what was? Over the years, journalists and historians have offered plenty of theories.
According to the National Archives and Records Administration's Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. The President of the United States has signed a proclamation proclaiming a national observance during that week every year since 1925. For more information and materials available please contact the National Fire Protection Association at 617) 984-7285 or (800) 344-3555 or by e mail: bdunn@nfpa.org - or visit www.firepreventionweek.org

DANCE LIKE THERE’S NO TOMORROW.

Exercise increases oxygen to the brain and releases a protein that strengthens cells and neurons. Dance involves all of the above plus the cerebral activity present in learning and memory.

Older adults getting regular physical exercise are 60% less likely to get dementia.

National Eye Injury Prevention Month

..Eye injuries of all types occur at a rate of more than 2,000 per day. In particular, an estimated 1,000 eye injuries occur in American workplaces alone. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) found that almost 70% of the eye injuries studied occur from falling or flying objects, or sparks striking the eye.
The best ways to prevent injury to the eye is to always wear the appropriate eye protection.

Drive Safely Prevention Month

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of deaths and injuries on the roadways.Drivers must keep a clear head and a sharp focus. Being well rested, alert, attentive and considerate keeps drivers safe on the road.
The annual campaign begins October 1 to help reduce the risk of motor vehicle crashes, fatalities, injuries and the related costs. They cost American employers $61 billion a year in wage and fringe benefits.
If drivers would buckle up every time they enter a vehicle and avoid dangerous distractions such as cell phone use and drunk, drowsy, and impaired driving, hundreds of lives would be saved each year.
