September is the National Hispanic Heritage Month

By: Library of U.S. Congress

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

National Healthy Aging Month

September is Healthy Aging Month is an annual celebration designed to focus attention on the positive aspects of growing older and encourage Americans over the age of 50 to take personal responsibility for their health.

During the Healthy Aging Month people are encouraged to reinvent themselves, take control of their health and use September as the motivation to take stock of where one’s been and consider to resolve that it’s not too late to shore up their health, pursue something new or revive a favorite hobby or activity. Right at Home senior care can help seniors achieve their goals and live their lives to the fullest.

National Cholesterol Education Month

High blood cholesterol affects over 65 million Americans. It is a serious condition that increases your risk for heart disease. The higher your cholesterol level, the greater the risk. You can have high cholesterol and not know it. Lowering cholesterol levels that are too high lessens your risk for developing heart disease and reduces the chance of having a heart attack or dying of heart disease.

September is National Cholesterol Education Month, a good time to get your blood cholesterol checked, and to learn about food and lifestyle choices that help you reach personal cholesterol goals.

President Barack Obama declared September 2013 as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, encouraging Americans to get involved in promoting healthy eating and physical activity for our kids nationwide.

Obesity affects millions of American children and teenagers, putting them at risk for serious health issues, such as diabetes, cancer, asthma, Lets Move - First lady Michellle Obama in San Diego with Ruben Abazariheart disease, and high blood pressure. Rates of childhood obesity—after exponentially increasing over the last three decades—are holding steady and even decreasing in some areas.

Let’s Move! continues to extend a call to action to get everyone involved in overcoming this epidemic. The First Lady remains dedicated to working together to change the way a generation of kids thinks about food and nutrition.

“We all share in the responsibility of helping our Nation’s children enjoy longer, healthier lives,” said President Obama. “Together, we can give them the energy and confidence to learn, excel, and pursue their dreams.”

Grandparents Day

September 8, 2012 is
National Grandparents Day

Back in 1970, Marian McQuade, a West Virginia housewife, came up with the idea of a day set aside to encourage families to visit their elderly relatives. With a firm resolve to make it happen, she began lobbying policymakers. McQuade got through to her Senators, Mr. Jennings Randolph and Mr. Robert Byrd, who introduced a resolution to make Grandparents Day a national holiday. It took sometime to reach the White House, but finally, in 1978, the resolution declaring National Grandparents Day was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter. National Grandparents Day is always the first Sunday after Labor Day.
