COOL Zone Tips

During hot weather you will need to increase your fluid intake, regardless of your activity level. People that spend time outdoors should drink 1 to 2 liters per hour that they are outdoors. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink. By the time your body tells you that you are thirsty, you are already mildly dehydrated.
Caffeinated drinks and alcohol dehydrate the body, which increases the need for drinking water.
Heat cramps are muscular pains and spasms due to heavy exertion. They usually involve the abdominal muscles or the legs. The loss of water and salt from heavy sweating causes heat cramps.

County’s “Cool Zones” Are NOW Open

.... With temperatures expected to reach the mid. 90s throughout the San Diego region, health officials warned the public to take precautions to avoid heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses.

.... “Even short periods of exposure to high temperatures can cause serious health problems,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County Public Health Officer. “Spending too much time in the sun, doing too much on a hot day, or staying too long in an overheated place can cause heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke, exhaustion and cramps.”

.... Elderly people, especially 65 years and older, infants and children and people with chronic medical conditions are more prone to heat stress. Neighbors of the elderly, especially those living alone, should check on their well-being.

... Specific conditions contributing to risk include obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, poor circulation, and sunburn. Risk behavior includes strenuous physical activity; drinking alcohol; and taking medications that impair the body’s ability to regulate its temperature or that inhibit perspiration.
An extremely high body temperature (103 or higher), dizziness, nausea, confusion and headache are signs of heat stroke or exhaustion.

The county of San Diego and San Diego Gas & Electric have kicked off their annual Cool Zones program 2014.

... Every summer, the county designates Cool Zone sites all over San Diego. These air-conditioned buildings are easily identifiable by a light blue Polar Bear Cool Zone logo.

... There are more than 100 locations throughout San Diego County in locations such as libraries, malls and senior centers. The sites encourage people to share air conditioning during the heat of the day to protect their health, and reduce their individual energy costs. Cool Zones are helping to conserve energy for the whole community and also are great places to meet people and socialize.

... The Cool Zone program began in 2001 after an unusually hot summer caused energy blackouts and higher utility costs. Supervisor Dianne Jacob created the idea of having designated Cool Zones where seniors and others could come to share air conditioning to save their own energy, and protect their health from the intense heat.

... Low-income, homebound seniors and disabled persons can request a free electric fan if they are unable to go to Cool Zone sites. The program also offers bus passes to qualified individuals in certain zip codes to help them get to designated Cool Zones.
